My first ever mock draft with the overall ranking function...
by: Rob Reed | March 4, 2010, 4:16pm

I am not a big fan of the "projections" from mockdraftcentral.com because they give one the opportunity for false bravado. They don't mean assured success.

But, I can't help but present this projection, as it was my first mock draft using PLAYERtrack's overall ranking draft tool.

I went in with a strategy of making my next pick one of the top 10 available players on my overall listing (unless I had filled the positions already).

This was an ESPN-style draft, ten teams, with one catcher, three reserves, and 25 rounds. I had the second pick.

Discuss: You have the third pick in a serpentine draft... who do you pick?
by: Rob Reed | February 23, 2010, 6:54am

Last night, Fantasy Baseball Trade Market did a draw for the pick order, and I blessedly get the third pick in the Premiere League (last league listed).

So, of course, I'm choosing between Ben Zobrist and Jose Reyes, right?

Anatomy of a "lucky season" for a pitcher: using LOB% (strand rate) and BABIP
by: Rob Reed | February 22, 2010, 4:58pm

The Giants signed (again) Todd Wellemeyer off of the free agent market today.

As a result, I needed to update the player profile, and at the same time, I found a great example of why you should pay attention to strand rate and BABIP when determining whether a pitcher is the "real deal" or not.

Todd's 2007: 4.54 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, .282 BABIP, 71% LOB
Todd's 2008: 3.71 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, .258 BABIP, 78% LOB
Todd's 2009: 5.89 ERA, 1.77 WHIP, .328 BABIP, 71% LOB

Todd has shown that he is more of a 71% strand-rate pitcher, historically. So, that was predictable. But, the... [read more]
